Developer or technically minded? Oak can connect to any AI tool that supports Model Context Protocol (MCP) connections. Find out how here. **Do I need an account with the AI tool to use it?** Yes. You need an active account with your chosen AI tool and to be signed in to install and use our AI plugin. **Do I need an Oak account?** Yes, and it’s free. You’ll be prompted to sign in to your Oak account, or one will be created for you if you don't already have one. **Is Oak's AI plugin free to use?** We don't charge for this service. Your AI provider's account and plan rules may apply. **Is the plugin available outside the UK?** Our curriculum is designed for the English national curriculum, so the plugin is intended for teachers in the UK. Where the AI provider supports it, we restrict access to UK users. This varies between providers, as each offers different controls. **How do I install it (as an individual teacher)?** The quickest way is the [one-click Install button on our website](https://www.thenational.academy/ai-plugin), and choose Try in ChatGPT or Try in Claude to get started. Turn a misconception into homework or revision questions, create a knowledge organiser from the key vocabulary, make a starter quiz for your pupils, and more. Our AI plugin can also suggest ways to adapt our content for your pupils, such as scaffolding a task or reflecting local context. We'd love your feedback! Send any thoughts or comments to [support@thenational.academy](mailto:support@thenational.academy). **Will the AI plugin always use Oak's content?** No. Your AI tool will only use our plugin when it decides a question would benefit from Oak's content. For general questions, your AI tool answers from its own knowledge instead. **Are the AI tool’s answers checked or approved by Oak?** No. We provide the plugin so your AI tool can draw on Oak's resources and curriculum data, but your AI tool generates its own answers. Always check what you create is right for your pupils and context. **What Oak content is available?** Our AI plugin draws on content that is © Oak National Academy Limited (2026), licensed on [Open Government Licence version 3.0](https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/) except where otherwise stated. See [Oak's terms & conditions (Collection 2)](https://www.thenational.academy/legal/terms-and-conditions). **Is there anything the AI tool can’t do with the plugin?** Yes. Your AI tool can't access anything outside what the plugin is built to reach, can't guarantee its answers are fully accurate, and doesn't replace a teacher's professional judgement on curriculum or safeguarding decisions. **What are the advantages of using it?** It gives your AI tool direct access to our expert, national curriculum-aligned content, all of which has been quality-assured by subject experts. Answers can therefore be more relevant to what you actually teach, and you save time moving between Oak's website and your AI tool. ### Data and safety **What protections are there for school and pupil data?** Our AI plugin is read-only. It only draws on Oak's own curriculum and resources, and it doesn't store or use the content you send. We don't collect the content of your prompts, the responses you receive, or your IP address or location. We collect only a limited set of usage records (for example, that a session started, which AI tool you're using, and which resources you access) under a pseudonymised identifier, to run and improve our service. Your AI provider is a separate service with its own data handling, so use the privacy and data settings within your AI tool, and follow your school's policy on using school data in these tools. **Is pupil data sent to the AI tool?** Our AI plugin only reads Oak's curriculum, and we don't collect the content of your prompts or the responses you receive. However, your AI provider is a separate service with its own data handling, outside of our control. So, as with any AI tool, don't enter pupil names, personal information, safeguarding information or confidential school data. Follow your school's AI policy. See our [privacy policy](https://www.thenational.academy/legal/privacy-policy) for what data we do and don't collect. ### Schools and trusts **How do I install it across my school or trust?** If you're an IT administrator setting up our AI plugin across your school or trust, you can install and manage it at organisation level. This lets you apply your own enterprise controls (deciding who can use it and keeping it within your existing security and compliance settings), rather than teachers installing it individually. When you install our AI plugin at organisation level, it sits within your existing security and compliance settings for that provider.
