Introduction

Oak National Academy integrates with Google Classroom so you can easily discover our lesson resources, attach them to assignments, and review your pupils' work — all within Google Classroom.

You may need to contact your IT administrator to set up the Oak add-on from the Google Workspace Marketplace.  Read this guide on how to install Google Classroom add-ons for more help. You must be using Google Workspace for Education Plus or the Teaching and Learning upgrade.

Please note that this is a beta trial. This means we are still testing and refining this tool with the help of teachers and schools.

Installing the Oak add-on

You may need to ask your school's IT admin to install the Oak add-on.

  1. Go to the Google Workspace Marketplace.

  2. Search for “Oak National Academy”.

  3. Select ‘Install’.

  4. You’ll now be taken through a series of permissions and consents to give access to the Google Account associated with your school's Google Classroom.

  5. If the installation is successful, you will see a message that the Oak add-on has been installed. At this point, you will be directed to complete the additional set-up. Please go ahead and select ‘Complete additional setup now’ and follow the instructions.

  6. When finished, the Oak add-on will appear in Google Classroom when you create an assignment.

Creating an assignment

  1. Log in to your Google Classroom and choose the ‘Classwork’ option.

  2. Select the ‘Create’ button and choose ‘Assignment’.

  3. You should now see the assignment screen.

    1. Give your assignment a title (required).

    2. Add optional instructions.

    3. Select the Oak add-on to start choosing which lessons to assign.

  4. The next screen you’ll see is the Oak lessons screen.

    1. Choose the year you want the lesson from.

    2. Now select the subject.

    3. If appropriate to your year and subject, you may be asked to choose a tier and/or an exam board.

    4. You’ll then be able to browse the units available.

    5. Click into a unit to see the list of lessons you can assign. There’s an overview of each lesson, so you can check if it is suitable to assign.

  5. Select a lesson by checking the box to the left of the lesson name.

  6. Then select ‘Attach lesson to assignment’ in the bottom right corner. You’ll be taken back to the assignment screen.

  7. Check you’re happy with the attached lesson and select ‘Save’ and then ‘Assign’.

  8. You’ll now be given the option to ‘Share classwork’.

  9. A pop-up box will appear with your shareable link. Select ‘Copy’ to now share the assignment link with your pupils.

Completing the assignment

  1. When your pupils go into Google Classroom, they’ll see your assignment in their list.

  2. When they select the assignment, they will be taken to the lesson overview page of the lesson you have asked them to complete.

  3. All lessons follow a similar format:

    1. An introduction, including any content warnings or equipment needed and worksheets pupils can download to go with the lesson.

    2. A starter quiz to test a pupil's prior knowledge before watching the lesson video.

    3. A lesson video which will typically include lesson objectives, questions to check understanding and various practice tasks with prompts to pause and start the video.

    4. An exit quiz to test the knowledge the pupil has gained by watching the lesson video.

  4. Once finished, your pupil should select the ‘Hand in completed assignment’ button.

  5. They’ll be taken back to the assignment area of Google Classroom and be asked to confirm they’ve handed in their work by selecting ‘Hand in’.

  6. The assignment will now show as handed in.

Reviewing the assignment

To help you manage assignments, you can choose to be notified by email or via Google Classroom once a pupil has handed in their assignment. Check your notification settings in Google Classroom to enable this.

  1. You can access handed-in work by selecting ‘To review’ from under the heading ‘Teaching’ on the right side of the screen.

  2. Now, select 'Review work' to view automatically marked assignments and a summary of the results.

  3. If multiple pupils have handed in the same assignment, you can switch between their results from the top left of the screen.

  4. The results will show you:

    1. The sections of the lesson that have been completed.

    2. The quiz results with a breakdown of scores, attempts made and the final score.

    3. Whether any accompanying worksheets were downloaded.

    4. How much of the lesson video was viewed by a pupil.

  5. You can then send the marked assignment back to the pupil by selecting  ‘Return’ to send it back to the pupil.

  6. In Google Classroom, pupils can now see that their assignments have been marked. At this point, they have the option to take the assignment again and resubmit it for marking.
