How to connect the Oak National Academy Plugin to OpenAI
Connect OpenAI with Oak National Academy to help you produce additional resources for your teaching
Who this article is for: Teachers using their own personal OpenAI account. If you're on a school or organisation OpenAI account, check with your IT team or account owner first, as they may need to enable the Plugin before you can install this one yourself.
The Oak National Academy Plugin can help OpenAI work directly with Oak's tools and content when it's relevant to what you're asking. Once it's installed, OpenAI can draw on Oak's resources and curriculum data to help answer your questions.

Before you begin
Before you install the Plugin, check the following:
-
You have an active OpenAI account and are signed in.
Please note: OpenAI uses the Plugin only when it determines that your question would benefit from Oak's content. It doesn't check Oak's resources for every message, even once the Plugin is installed and switched on.
Installing the Oak National Academy Plugin
The quickest way to install the Plugin is with the one-click Install button on the Oak National Academy website.
-
Go to the Oak National Academy website and click Try in OpenAI. OpenAI opens in a new tab with a message ready to send.
-
Click the orange arrow to send it, and an install card appears in the chat.
-
Tap Install on the card, then authorise Oak when prompted. OpenAI is now ready to draw on the Oak curriculum.
If OpenAI opens with an empty message box, paste the following text into the box and press Send.
“Install the Oak National Academy plugin.”
Prefer to add it manually? You can also find Oak National Academy by going to Plugins, in your OakAI account.

Start a new chat in OpenAI.

OpenAI will tell you it is now available.

Don't enter pupil names, personal information, safeguarding information or confidential school data into OpenAI or any third-party AI service. Follow your school's AI policy.

Troubleshooting and FAQs
Do I need an OpenAI account to use the Oak Plugin?
Yes. You need an active OpenAI account to install and use the Plugin. You don't need a separate Oak National Academy account.
Is the Oak Plugin free to use?
We don't charge for this service. Your AI provider's account and plan rules may apply.
What resources can I make?
You can ask OpenAI to create resources for you that are grounded in Oak’s high-quality content. Turn a misconception into homework or revision questions, create a knowledge organiser from the key vocabulary, make a starter quiz for your pupils and more. OpenAI can also suggest ways to adapt Oak's content for your pupils, such as scaffolding a task or reflecting local context.
We’d love your feedback - send any thoughts or comments to support@thenational.academy.
Does OpenAI look at the Oak resources every time I ask it a question?
No. OpenAI only uses the Plugin when it decides a question would benefit from Oak's content. For general questions, OpenAI answers from its own knowledge instead.
Does Oak control how accurate the OpenAI answers are?
No. Oak provides the Plugin so OpenAI can draw on Oak's resources and curriculum data, but OpenAI generates its own answers.
Outputs are AI-generated and not endorsed by Oak. Always check that what you create is right for your pupils and context.
How do I uninstall the Plugin?
Go to Plugins in OpenAI and find Oak National Academy. Then click Uninstall or Disable (see How to disconnect the Plugin earlier in this help article).
Is there anything OpenAI cannot do with the Plugin?
Yes. OpenAI can't access anything outside what the Plugin is built to reach, can't guarantee its answers are fully accurate, and doesn't replace a teacher's professional judgement on curriculum or safeguarding decisions.
What are the advantages of using the Oak Plugin with OpenAI?
It gives OpenAI direct access to Oak's expert, national curriculum-aligned content, all of which has been quality-assured by subject experts. Answers can therefore be more relevant to what you actually teach, and saves time moving between Oak's website and OpenAI.
